lake bosomtwe

this is where i was lodged.

lake bosomtwe is a crater lake, not from a volcano, but from a meteorite impact about a million years ago. it is tranquil and scenic. unlike the much larger lake volta, it is a natural lake.

observing the lake in the evening i see men on some sort of raft, the legs submersed in the water. i read up on it on the internet. the wooden plank rafts, locally known as padua, are used instead of conventional boats or canoes. according to local tradition, the use of canoes made from hollowed tree trunks was prohibited because the lake is regarded as sacred. motors are still not being used today. fishermen paddle these simple rafts by hand to reach their fishing grounds.

walking outside the hotel resort grounds, i come across some locals. almost everybody walks, occasionally i get to see someone on an old bicycle, very rarely there is a car on the dusty sand and gravel tracks.

hotel resort sounds grand, in reality there are very few guests. certainly our group of three is the only european group here.
